Hello Finners,
FIN home team came across an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education by Mike Rose titled Colleges Need to Re-Mediate Remediation and thought our teams could benefit from taking a glance at it. The Chronicle gave us a five day pass to read this article for free so check it out soon. Last day to view it is 09/13/2009.
I really liked the article. I have experienced this in contextualized classes too (as a teacher) I have heard from other researchers too that “rigor” or high standards are important. Thanks for sending on the article.
Two things stood out to me in this article:
“‘re-mediation’–that is, changing the environment and the means through which students are taught material they had not mastered before.”
“Successful remedial programs set high standards, are focused on inquiry and problem-solving in a substantial curriculum, use a pedagogy that is supportive and interactive, draw on a variety of techniques and approaches, are in line with students’ goals, and provide credit for course work.”
And it’s everything FIN!
